Monday mornings don’t always have the best reputation. Whether it’s grey skies, a slower start, or just the feeling that the weekend slipped by too quickly, it’s easy for both staff and residents to feel a little “meh” at the start of the week.
But what if we could change that?
What if Mondays became something to look forward to - not just for us as activity coordinators, but for the residents we support?
Let’s talk about manifesting a Monday Morning Motivation session.
- "Woah! Isn't that a little bit woo woo?"
Hold tight, let me explain.
What do I mean by ‘manifesting’?
We’re not talking about magical thinking (although in my world there’s always room for a little sparkle!). In this context, manifesting means being intentional - choosing to start the week with purpose, positivity, and a sense of connection.
It’s about creating a space where residents feel seen, valued, and energised for the days ahead.
And it starts with us.
Why Monday mornings matter!
Mondays set the tone for the week. For residents who rely on routine and rhythm, that first session of the week can offer:
A reason to get up and get dressed
A moment of connection with others
A spark of joy that carries into lunch, afternoon activities, or visits with family
A gentle reminder that this week can be meaningful, too
A Monday Morning Motivation session doesn’t need to be complicated, it just needs to be intentional.
Activity ideas to manifest a meaningful Monday
Here are a few activity ideas you can try or adapt. Think of these as starting points for shaping your own version of Monday morning magic:
The Gratitude Circle
Gather residents (or go room to room) and ask:
“What’s one thing you’re grateful for today?”
Responses can be as simple as “my cup of tea” or “hearing the birds.”
Pop their answers into a communal Gratitude Jar or write them on a board to display.
Weekly Intention Setting
Ask:
“What would make this a good week? "
“What are you looking forward to? "
Use picture cards, magazine cut-outs, or simple conversation prompts to guide discussion.
Music & Movement
Begin with a 10–15 minute burst of uplifting music. Add in gentle stretches, seated movement, or even some hand dancing.
Try tracks like:
Here Comes the Sun by The Beatles
What a Wonderful World by Louis Armstrong
Walking on Sunshine by Katrina & The Waves
Affirmation of the Week
Pick one short, meaningful phrase, here are some suggestions:
I am strong and capable
Today is a new day, and I am ready for it
I am valued, loved and appreciated
Every smile I share brings joy to someone's day
Display the affirmation on tables or trays, or give each resident a card to keep.
Say it together as part of your Monday Motivation session.
Make it personal: Use the HELPS System
Let your Monday session speak to the individuals you’re supporting. My HELPS system is a wonderful guide:
H - Histories: Include stories, songs, or rituals from residents’ pasts. Maybe someone always read the paper on Mondays, or had a favourite Monday lunch.
E - Experiences: Use sensory cues - smells, sounds or textures. Did someone always have toast with marmalade or wear a particular perfume?
L – Lifestyles: Match the tone to their usual pace. Some residents thrive on lively chats, others prefer quiet music and gentle reflection.
P - Preferences: Let residents choose how (or whether) to take part. No pressure - just invitation.
S - Strengths: Focus on what they can do. Can someone read the affirmation aloud? Be assigned as the DJ? Offer a smile or thumbs-up?
Start small - Let it grow
Not every Monday will go to plan. But every Monday offers a chance to begin again.
Even if just one resident lights up at the thought of Monday Morning Motivation, you’ve made a difference. And over time, these little rituals can become meaningful traditions.
So next Monday, take a breath. Set an intention. Light a candle or play a tune. And welcome the week in, with purpose and positivity.
