Make room for fun & connection: Summer activity ideas for care homes

As we head into the summer months, it’s easy to get caught up in the logistics of seasonal changes - hydration plans, sun protection, and juggling holiday cover. But alongside all the practicalities, let’s not forget one of the greatest gifts summer brings: an opportunity to create moments of pure fun and deep connection.

You don’t need big budgets or elaborate events to tap into that summer feeling. In fact, some of the most powerful moments happen when we slow down and create space to simply be with our care home residents.

Here are a few simple ways to spark joy and connection this summer:

1. Take the indoors outside

We often speak about the importance of bringing the outdoors inside, now I'm asking you to consider taking the indoors outside.

If you’ve got access to a garden, patio, or even a sunny doorway:

  • Host an ice cream tasting afternoon with a few different flavours and cones.

  • Set up a garden games table with dominoes, cards, or jigsaws in the fresh air.

  • Bring out some music and movement - a bit of gentle dancing or seated Zumba under the sun can do wonders.

Even as little as five minutes outside can lift a resident’s mood and strengthen your bond.

2. Encourage shared summer memories

Use the season as a springboard for conversation:

  • Bring in props such as fancy sunglasses, buckets and spades, or old postcards.

  • Ask open questions:

    • "What did your family do in the summer?"

    • "Do you remember your first holiday?"

  • Use scents that evoke thoughts of summer - this can be especially powerful for residents living with dementia.

    • Arrange to go outside straight after (or whilst) the grass is being cut.

    • Talk about the smell of the sun cream you're applying.

These conversations often lead to laughter, warmth, and the kind of shared stories that make our roles so meaningful.

3. Make it light, make it joyful

Summer doesn’t have to be jam-packed with structured activities. In fact, residents often enjoy:

Spontaneous singalongs

A sun hat or summer scarf fashion show

Cool drinks and chats in the shade

Moments of silliness can bring real connection - and they’re just as valid as more formal sessions.

4. Involve others and ease the load

Invite staff, volunteers, or family members to join in - whether they’re bringing homemade lemonade or just sitting for a chat. Connection doesn’t only have to come from you.

And don’t forget: if you're feeling overwhelmed, you don’t have to do it all yourself. The Activity Coordinators Toolbox is full of seasonal packs, activity ideas, and downloadable printables to help you save time and energy - so you can focus on what matters most.

5. And finally - soak up some summer yourself

Take a breather when you can. Sit with a cuppa by an open window. Feel the sun on your face. You deserve joyful moments too.

Because the more you feel connected and refreshed, the more you’ll pass that energy on to your residents.

Here’s to a summer of simple pleasures, shared laughter, and unexpected joy.
