With this year’s British summer declared the wettest summer in 10 years, it’s no surprise residents at Pilgrims View care home were looking at different ways to bring the great outdoors in, without getting wet!
It all began when Glenda Roberts, Head of Avante care homes in Kent, introduced an imaginative idea across Avante’s care homes for staff and residents to create a ‘live wall’.
The wall had to illustrate a form of live scenery such as an underwater scene, garden or beach scene.
Every home took part, all creating an array of scenery’s, using different materials and textures.
Having taken part in the ‘live wall’ residents and staff at Pilgrims View, began to think how this could develop into a regular activity in the home.
This was when the idea of an indoor garden was born!
Avante Care & Support has adopted the Eden Alternative as its philosophy of
care.
The philosophy provides a framework for all staff to understand and practice
person centered care.
The goal is to improve the wellbeing of residents and service users, and those
who care for them, by transforming the communities in which they live and
work.
The aim is to eliminate loneliness, helplessness and boredom, which are
the three prevalent states of mind most observed in older people and those
living with dementia.
The 'live wall' at Pilgrims View includes seating for residents to sit together and enjoy their 'Happy Place' helping to address all three of their aims.
